On September 2, 2014, Legal Aid Ontario announced new funding to its 6 SLASS clinics to assist them in delivering desperately needed family law services. For the University of Toronto’s Downtown Legal Services, this new funding will allow them to expand their current family law practice to serve more clients. For the 5 other SLASS clinics, Osgoode Hall Law School’s Community and Legal Aid Services Program, University of Ottawa’s Community Legal Clinic, Queen’s Legal Aid, Western University’s Community Legal Services and University of Windsor’s Community Legal Aid , this funding will allow them establish new family law practices. The Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) released on July 23 a long-awaited and important report on reform of the family justice system. Downtown Legal Services (DLS) at the University of Toronto received several mentions as the only student legal clinic in Ontario that provides family law assistance.
ACCLE president Doug Ferguson of Western Law has been appointed to the CBA’s Futures Initiative Committee for Legal Education and Training. The CBA is looking at the future of the legal profession, and will be taking a close look at our legal education system. Doug is a council member of both the CBA and the OBA.
Downtown Legal Services at the University of Toronto celebrated its 40th anniversary earlier this year. Speakers such as well-known Family Court Judge Harvey Brownstone and Legal Aid Ontario CEO Bob Ward spoke at a special reception.
